Current projects: Dolennau Iaith - Language Links

with Menter Maldwyn and a group of villages in Montgomeryshire in mid Wales.

Dolennau Iaith will give village communities in Montgomeryshire, mid-Wales, a chance to learn about the links between language and landscape and how the names that we use reveal the particular character of a place.

Place names conjure up human history from the earliest times, the geological character of the landscape, the natural history, the way that the land has been cultivated and managed, and the stories and myths that have been told.

This project will support and extend the knowledge of Welsh in each community and use creative ways of helping people express their feelings about the local landscape using various events and activities.

A series of village sculptures are planned to result from the project.

These will express the sense of the special character of the area and be designed and made by local people.

Llanbrynmair is the first village in the area to get involved, and in June 2004, Creu-ad artists Lynne Denman, Shelagh Hourahane and Claudine le Corre spent a day with Ysgol Llanbrynmair, helping the children think about the meaning of local names for houses, farms and landscape features.

They made banners to be used at later events.

In September there was a weekend with activities for everyone in the community:

  • a talk on the origin of local place names given by Professor Hywel Wyn Owen
  • stories about the land told by Michael Harvey
  • an introduction to the work of the Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust in the area
  • an opportunity to contribute to an artwork, to tell local stories and to go on a tour or walk around the locality with Cyril Jones an expert guide to the area.

A Llanbrynmair heritage walking trail is now being planned by the local group.
