The Visitor Centre after transformation by the 'Marram Shadows' poetry sculpture by Mick Petts |
A Sense of Arrival at Ynys-lasA dynamic environment created by the effects of climate, exposure, the sea, wind and tides.Marram Shadows was designed by Mick Petts as a sculptural treatment to the Visitor Centre. It integrates the building into its environment and expresses the dynamic quality of the dunes. It includes incised texts from poems about Ynys-las written by children at ysgol Craig-yr-Wylfa, Borth during workshops with Menna Elfyn and Gillian Clarke. Jenny Fell helped them to make The Big Book, an illustrated version of the poems. Mick Petts designed The Banded Snail lookout that enables visitors to enjoy the view up the Dyfi Estuary. The form of the lookout is based on that of the banded snails, which live on the dunes. The structure allows one to appreciate that even very small creatures are important in maintaining the ecosystem of the reserve. A mosaic links the two parts of the Visitor Centre. The floor element focuses on the legendary story of Cantre'r Gwaelod, the land drowned beneath Cardigan Bay, while the wall mosaic shows images of the wealth of plants, animals and birds that are to be found at Ynys-las through the four seasons. The mosaic was designed by Jenny Fell, who worked with community groups to make the main elements. It was installed with the help of Judy Macklin and Annie Horner. |
